I'm not into astronomy but I met a guy a week or so back that is.

He spent half the night outside looking through his telescope and showing me all the shiney stuff he was looking at.

The evening star is actually Venus. He also showed me all these other gallaxies and globular things and I even got to see the rings of saturn.

You can't miss satalites they travel quiet quickly across the night sky not as fast as shooting stars but nowhere near as slow as everything else.

Shooting stars are not shooting stars they are junk burning up as it is trying to enter our atmosphere by junk I mean meteors and whatever else is floating out there.

He mentioned that if you can see it "twinkling" it's a star and if it's not it is a planet.

In a nut shell if it looks like it's not moving it's either the reflection of a planet or a star.

.
twinkiling is an atmospheric condition due to movement of dust in the air (on earth) so it will equally been seen with planets and stairs.

I'd heard the same as Festa on the twinkling... Eg. that planets don't twinkle. I'll have to check it out next time I'm in a place where I can actually see stars...
