Default Service Parts Advice

Hey Guys,

I bought an XJ on Saturday, its a 99 sport. Its done 128,000kms.
Just a a quick look over it and its needs a major service.

I found some information on filters on the site. I am going to use a Z9 and some 10w-30 oil for the oil change.

I need some advice on the following though.

1. Trans oil - DEXTRON III ?
2. Tranfer case - DEXTRON III?
3. Coolant - is there a specific jeep coolant?
4. Front and rear diff oils? What type? Do I have to add someting to the rear diff oil? I think its a LSD.
5. Powersteering fluid - Dextron III?

Ps I was reversing the car yesterday and heard a clunking type noise from around the trans. I think the trans mount is shagged. I will order one from Wooders. Should I do all the monts, and keep the unbroken ones as spares?

Thanks in advance.
Cheers
Lukas

Hey, good work, sounds like a good buy.
1- Yep, dex III for trans oil. I like to drain using the transmission drain plug, refill, drive it a couple days then drain again. Repeat until the fluid is red. Only problem is this doesn't clean the filter.
2- Dexron III for transfer case as well. Make sure you remove the fill plug before you remove the drain plug. Just in case you can't remove the fill plug...
3- No specific jeep coolant, just get something with a good anti corrosion package, nulon is a good brand..
4- Just standard diff oil 75W- 90 for front and rear diffs. It's the most common one. It usually has an anti slip additive included, will say on bottle. If you have the crappy d35 rear diff and wanna tow or anything its good to use thicker 75W-140 oil in the back. Synthetic helps too.
5- Use genuine jeep power steering fluid from the jeep dealer. Its clear. It's not too expensive, around 14 dollars per container i think (900 ml or so). i have read somewhere that there is a valvoline synthetic power steering fluid that you can also use.

Prob not a bad idea to replace the mounts, i don't know too much about that stuff. Check http://www.greatlakesxj.com/tech.html for factory workshop manuals and http://jeep-xj.info/ for handy info..

Also try Castrol Anti Freeze Anti Boil [concentrate of course], it is available everywhere ... it is good stuff.

Its very easy(and pretty cheap) to do a full auto trans filter replacement too. I did one last year with parts from repco, new filter and new gasket.

Welcome to the forum.
do the '99's have dizzys? if so look at replacing roter button and dizzy cap. Spark plug leads and plugs.
Also @ 128K both the oxy sensors are approaching the end of their service life. and the passenger side engine mount could well be shagged as well.
I believe it could be well worth your time to get a whole bunch of the service parts from rock auto in the states in a single bulk order. I was realy surprised to see how far $200 went when ordering service parts from the states compared to local suppliers. The parts are dirt cheap ($10 engine mount/ $15 trans mount)) it is just the postage- still cheaper than local though especially when you bundle it all together. All delivered to your door- takes about a week.
Serpentine belt, rad hoses and thermostat, are other items that you will need sooner or later and could be added to the bundle.
Good luck with it.
