I dabbled when I was a teen.
I had a pan (Dad got it for me from the mining museum in Kalgoorlie), and had him make a rock crusher (think a mortar and pestle, a foot long cylinder with one end blanked off, and a thing that could be used to crush rock into dust)
I found one tiny speck in a huge pile of dirt before school holidays expired.
A pan's easy to use, scoop up dirt/crushed rock, with some water, swirl it around, the gold is heavier than most everything else and should settle to the bottom of the pan.
Other than that, a google search should net heaps of help.

Yep, Miners Right, Minelab detector (up to 7 grand for the latest) and research. Legally you are only allowed to detect (metal detecting is classed as mining) on unallocated crown land or have permission of the tenement holder, can be big penalties if caught doing the wrong thing. Also should notify any Pastoralists concerned. This is in WA, don't know about the rest.

gold prospecting
thats my hobby, and why I own a Jeep and now the Jeep is taking over
you need a miners right, buy on line from Vic govt for about $27 for two years. however in all the years I have been prospecting never been asked by any official to see it, even a couple of weeks ago while sluicing in a spot between Woods Point and Warburton the DSE appeared and they only wanted to have a chat and see what I was up to
I go to the mountain areas and use a sluice and a pump, hardwork but gets you in, plus good excuse to go to remote and rugged places
the sluice box I made out of sheetmetal
