Total noob (to jeep and 4x4) what do you think I need?
G'day all. I've just become (as of yesterday) a Jeep owner. 2007 jeep wrangler unlimited sport. This is also my first 4x4. I'm keen to get it off road but none too sure about what I need to do (if anything) to get it ready? Lift kit, recovery gear, prices (yes, I'm tight) etc. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated. Cheers in advance.

If you plan on going out on your own recovery gear first.
If no phone service where you plan to go get a UHF radio.
Get rid of those rear H/T tyres and put the same as the front.

Front and rear recovery points, (which usually leads to you buying bars), recovery gear, decent first aid kit, as Snort said, matching A/T's, and UHF.
A swaybar disconnect kit (if not already installed) will help immensely with front end articulation when wheeling.
Of course how far you want to go depends on your needs/wants, how mechanically adept you are and budget....4 1/2 lift, 37's, dana 60's.... Jeep does stand for "Just Empty Every Pocket" and the amount you can spend is unlimited. Have a look at some of the cool build threads on here.
I think JK's are like Lego for adults with all the bits you can add, change or take off, unless stock there are generally no 2 alike, and they are never "finished".
The search function on here is awesome for ideas, as most questions have already been thought about or done by other members on here, most of the time with photos.
If your new to wheeling then probably the most important thing is to first go out with experieced people or do some driver training (you could join MJOC, if you're that way inclined)as i I believe they have regular training and newcomer days. Youll also find like minded Jeepers. Not a great idea to go out by yourself if not experieced and prepared.
Congrats on the purchase, hope to see you on the trails some time (although work, wife, house reno's and bub dictate time allocation)😁

As far as being a total newbie to wheeling goes, you'll just need the basics really.
A good set of tyres will get you through stuff, but without them you can still have fun.
I'd suggest start by getting some recovery gear that is suitable. So that means a Snatch strap, dampener and some shackles aslong as making sure it has some recovery point. If your Jeep has a towbar, grab a Hayman reece recovery point from any reputable store.
And maybe try to find a UHF (12v or portable hand) on gumtree or ebay. If you're going out with friends, you might be able to get away without this, but those are pretty much the basics that I want to know someone has before I go out with them.
I don't have a quick disconnect kit on my JKU. I wish I did, but I always end up buying something else. Have a look online and see what kind of advantage it gives. I normally just grab a socket and spend 5 mins whilst airing down.

Buy a comprehensive recovery kit. I would get a cheap one from somewhere like supacentre or super cheap auto on special. You may not use much of it so only replace the stuff you do use with good stuff when it wears out. Maybe $180 or so.
Rear tow bar makes a good recovery point. About $100.
Compressor and UHF will be needed. Get a brand name UHF. I would definitely buy a decent compressor first up. Chinese ones don't last. Arb compressors I really like, about $300
Can probably get away with a set of oem wrangler 245 75 17 tyres and a spacer lift. About $400 and $150.
Sway bar disconnects are about $180 and greatly increase off road abilities.
Don't go spending thousands on lifts, winches and bars etc until you have been out and enjoyed the Jeep and learnt its limits. You may be pretty happy and decide all you need is a nice set of tyres.
