turbo coolant pipe- early wk2 diesel
Ok,learnt somthing today!!
Ive got a late my 13, 2014 grand cherokee limited diesel with the vm 3L diesel.
Took the car to my mechanic to get a new intake manifold i had put on and thought while at it, id replace the notorious turbo coolant hose and some other hoses.
To our surprise my engine has a one piece metal pipe, assume its the turbo coolant pipe, no rubber joiner at all.
Further also noticed the rear of the water pump seems to have a single outlet pipe which feeds into a split pipe, not the normal large and small seperate pipes.
Also the coolant bypass hose near the water pump pulley is made out of alloy, not the standard crappy plastic part.
It appears these early VM motors are a bit different re parts.
Jeep dealer put up the VIN and reckoned it should have had the standard turbo pipe (with rubber joiner etc) . They have no idea why the motor has these parts.
It appears some of these early 8 speed wk2s were a bit different!!
Somone said the turbo’s on the early ones were oil cooled instead if water ?
The design and parts seem way better!!

Yes, the earlier VM's have a number of differences to later versions, but not all of the changes were for the better as time has shown. The 5sp 2011-13 turbo's are oil cooled.
It could be that the later 2013 builds (ie. early MY14) 8sp had some 'transitional' changes for a short time after which further changes were made from later MY14?

Mine is an October 2013 car.
Really strange, the turbo coolant pipe is one piece of metal tube out of the block with a couple of coils about half way along and then goes back to the turbo.
One thing for sure, it will cool the coolant to the turbo really well.

As far as Ive been able to find the turbo change came about from oil cooled to water/oil cooled in late 2013...... Its a difficult thing to track down as the changeover occured when the diesel bacame available to the yanks, hence the earlier models didn't exist.
The oil cooled turbo jobs will only have one all metal pipe in the valley while the water cooled job will have 2 pipes, the coolant one having the rubber hose bit...... I have no idea what the other pipe is though.

I read somewhere that the change to water cooling was supposed to be an advancement to assist in preventing the oil left in the turbo shaft from "cooking" after shutdown thereby extending the bearing and turbo's life.
I stand to be corrected, but wasn't the output of the 3L VM increased from 177kw and 550 NM to 184kw and 570 NM from the 2014 model with the 8 spd ZF along with the introduction of the new water cooled Garrett turbo charger?

My August 2013 build MY14 has the turbo coolant hose from hell.
So it appears there must have been some random stock of the old engine that found its way back on the assembly line.
