Hey guys, I hate to show my ignorance, but just what is the swirl motor? And if it can be bypassed, what effect will this have on driving or resale?
cheers

From another site:
Each cylinder incorporates one swirl port and one charge port. The swirl ports can be closed by the swirl flaps (seen in my pics) In the lower engine speed and load range, the swirl flaps are closed by the swirl valve actuator. The entire air mass flows through the charge ports only, which results in greater swirling (hence the name). The increased swirling produces uniform combustion for better engine performance and reduction of particulates. As rotational speed and load increases, the swirl valves open, so that optimal swirling and the required air mass are provided for the current operating conditions.

That's sounds about right. I can say though that there are dozens and dozens on the merc forum who disable them cause the Benz has mostly plastic bits and they do cause big hassles seizing up and leaking. No one has reported any noticeable lack in performance or economy. I certainly can't tell anything in my 2.7.

If it happens to me (touch wood it won't - I bought the black inlet seal to try and stop it) I will most certainly be doing the re-wiring thing. Even if it does cost a dollar extra in fuel per 100 km's or 1000 km's or whatever, it's still cheaper than getting it replaced.
