Yeah, agreed.
AMC V8 alloy timing cover, about $350 aud landed. Cheapest price i found here was about $700 to my door.
Same with lots of bits.
Unfortunately whilst i do like to support local business (and having 2 4wds I do) sometimes, you gotta draw a line. $ are $.

Brad,
I know I will be seen as biased posting this up. I am not saying where you should or should not spent your hard earnt $$ - but here's a few reasons for you to consider towards your actual question:
There are many many internet only shops online - some of these don't carry any stock (ie no overheads) and literally dropship from the manufacturer to you. But they buy at the same wholesale price and thus will often massively undercut the advised RRP from the manufacturer. To the point that some sell items for only a few dollars more than the wholesale price.
Some manufacturers have tried to address this with MAP (Min Advertise Price) policies - but there are ways around that.
Some of these internet only shops will also often simply run a website as a "side business" so again they don't really care if they only make a few bucks.
Nor do they have the overhead of rent/staff/coffee/etc
Shops outside Aust do not have to worry about GST or duties or even public liability insurance for products sold outside USA.
Anyhow at the end of the day remember there is often much more to a transaction then just a "Buy-it Now" button

Hey wooders,
Yeah look i completely understand where an online shop may be cheaper, and i completely understand that when you buy local, you are also making connection with people and your community that can help in the future etc
So the place im looking at buying from is quadratec (which i believe has a shop front so isnt an online business) in the US, but i wont name the local retailer in fear of getting into bounds of trouble :P but if you look at the cost of the actual parts, it is about 3-4 times more expensive to buy local, not including shipping costs... thats ridiculous.
Lets say its costs AU$1100 to land it here, id be prepared to pay an extra maybe $300, so $1400 to buy here local, to me that $300 would be worth supporting local business, making new connections for help in future etc... but to have to spend an extra $800-$900 to buy the same parts, well thats a different storey...

It's simple... work out the price again at 70c, 80c and 90c to the dollar...
It's just timing...seriously, when the dollar drops again the local guys will seem much more attractive.
I say, shop where you are happy to shop, unfortunately some businesses are more exposed to currency fluctuation than others, mine included.
And remember, whilst sales may be down for our aussie suppliers, they are still buying much cheaper too, so it eases the burden a little.

how does that work? Why shouldn't the local suppliers pass on any savings that the higher australian dollar brings?
One of the reasons I would not buy locally any more is due to the fact that when the dollar went down to 60c the local guys were pretty quick to up their prices but as soon as it went up to 80c then 90c it seemed like an eternity before they adjusted anhything.
Quadratrec and 4wd hardware are your best friends. Its so easy to purchase something from the states and have it freighted here and the savings are huge.
I wouldn't waste my time with local guys that keep stringing you along saying yeah it will be here next week and it doesn't come and who dont follow up orders you place with them. Just unorganised.
