Future Jeeps for 2017
Jeep CEO Mike Manley has told the UK’s AutoExpress magazine that the 2017 Wrangler will definitely look like a Wrangler.
“We have to be very careful - if we produce a Wrangler that doesn’t look like a Wrangler I would have to have eight security guards!”
Among other things revealed about the new model is that it may be available with a hybrid power train.
“Torque and crawl ratios are important for people who use the Wrangler off road,” Mr Manley said.
“With an electric motor you have the most torque available, and with the right combination of transmission and gear ratios you can create incredible crawl ratios.’
However, Mr Manley also noted that the use case for a Wrangler is very different than for something like a Grand Cherokee, and said that the way the technology is used to ensure that the vehicle’s range and performance isn’t negatively affected.
“If you are eight hours into a trail there is no hybrid that we could do which could provide the battery support.”
That points towards a hybrid system that would be implemented and perform differently to existing systems.

Hmmmm Hybrid.
Given I can get 11L/100km in a 3.8 JKUR on highway cruise at 100kmh, I'd like to see the hybrid drive play a function in off the line acceleration as well as any trickery off road.
Cos I then spike up to 16-18L on the daily shuffle..

Could work out really well. Wonder how a hybrid system will cope with offroad abuse. Let's hope everything fragile is well and truly protected.

It would have to be done well just to gain acceptance.
But then, I suppose 150 years ago there was a lot of concern regarding the off road abilities of the new fangled horse less carriage, over the tried and proven horse, in offroad environments.

next Toyota will be making a 4WD pirus !
Hybrids are aimed at the pseudo Chardonnay socialists living in concrete cities. They could be interested in a hybrid jeep for taking the kids to school.

Eventually hybrids will take over, and if I can buy one with a JEEP badge on it I will take it long before I drive one designed by a WHALE EATER and then outsourced to be manufactured in a 3rd world country....
