Tyre Repairs
So this bloke advertises a 33" Bighorn in excellent condition. I drive all the way there and its got a repair on the side. Looks like a stick must of whacked it and I would say a shop has vulcanized the inside. I said i didn't want the tyre, and he said he had never noticed the repair as it was in his shed as a spare etc... apologizing... and anyway he said i could just have it.
I got it home, cleaned it up (it has 90% tread) and have taken some pics to post up.
Now, i would like some opinions on whether this tyre could be used purely as a spare. I believe it would hold air, due to the vulcanizing, but can you run a tube in a 33" tyre as an extra precaution if it was suitable as a spare.
Cheers,

I would use it as an emergency spare only. If it lets go, I don't think a tube would stop it.

I have always thought sidewall patches and plugs are a big no no on car and 4x4 tyres, not trucks.
It might be worth it as a spare carcass to get you out of the shit, but it might then get you in more of the shit when it too gives way.

Sidewall repairs to any tyre is illegal and will void your insurance if in place or the cause of an accident. In my experience a tyre place would not make such a repair so as to avoid being implicated in any legal action arising as a consequence of the failure of the repair.
Seriously, ditch it and buy a new one... it's your life and the life of others at stake!!

I'm pretty sure sidewall repairs aren't illegal if my research is correct, happy to be corrected if I'm wrong though.
There are very few people that repair sidewall damage, I only know of one and he is in Brisbane. Depending on the damage some are not doable/safe. I have a tyre with a sidewall repair and have not concerns about it. If it i done correctly it should be as safe as any other repair.
