it's "Russian" Roulette buying any used car these days....I only bought the one I have now from a Dealer to enable me to get a warranty...
It is now 18 months down the track and fortunately have only had to replace the water pump..."under warranty".
The Service records on this one were really not great either, they showed the original selling Jeep Dealer was still using 5w 30 oil instead of 5w 40...after the update was sent out by FCA. I did have the 3 trouble hoses replaced after I bought it...
I also did an OBD download before I picked it up from the Dealer, and it had over a dozen codes, including a fuel contamination warning! Quite obviously that used car Dealer had never even put it through their workshop before sticking it out front for sale!

Never trusted service books on any vehicle, this current horse had the 40K km Service stamped, I picked it up at 41K km and being me I dump fluids and filters soon as I get a new set of wheels, regardless of what the book says, fuel filter had never been changed as it turned out and that proved my point that changing every thing is a good idea, now some 90K km later its still a sweet rig ..... with weekly checks all over to spot something while its small....

Worth noting too that many dealers, and some independents, can't be arsed changing the oil viscosity on the charge list for each vehicle they do - so even if it says 5w30, it's possible it was 5w40.
As Drover said though, definitely worth dumping all fluids and replacing filters ASAP on all second hand vehicles, unless you know the history for certain.

If in the service book it has been serviced by an independent, it doesnt hurt to give them a call about the car.
