I have had one of those black plastic ones for about 14 years as well. Still going great. Have since bought another two.

I ended up buying a steel one a fortnight ago as all the plastic jobs stated "do not store in direct sunlight", and I figured if I ever have them mounted externally or the top of it's going to be kept in "direct sunlight".

That's my 1c

Cheers,
B.

I store them in my shed and only place them on the vehicle when on a trip when i need them that way they do not have to much affect from sun.
Did think about having a canvas cover for them but figured not worth the expense. As stated mine purchased in 1994 and still going stong.
No real need to store on vehicle in sun all year round. (no insult or offence implied)

Reason i needed good seal not ideal position but all I had
Front passenger side 2 x 20lt. Back driverside 1 x 20lt water and two spare tyres on roof Trip to Cape. Filled jerry at last servo we could before travelling up to keep weight down.

Had one hanging off the back of a TJ for 5yrs ... still using it 5yrs later.

Biggest problem with leaving them in sunlight is the expansion which weakens the joins. More of a heat issue than a UV issue and steel ones swell also.

A "tight fit" jerry can holder seems to address that problem ...

As 4WD4FUN said ... store them properly when not being used and they will last well.

Theres no right or wrong in either type ... its just that a quality plastic one has a few more benefits.

Based on the above comments demonstrating long term real world use I would buy plastic if buying again, doh!

Cheers,
