Hi guys,

Thank you for the replies. Jeep assist did very well and the whole episode didn't cost me a cent. Is anyone aware of another little (unreliable) part on a JK that can leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere like a CPS can do? That is why I asked about other breakdowns.

Cheers

Picked up this little cheap OBD-2 code reader from Jaycar last week for $89...just cheap and easy.

Handy rather than playing with the key and robust enough to throw in the toolbox and not worry about.

Matt.

No one has been threatened with eviction for negative comments davidd, what has been asked is that things are done constructively after all thats the idea of the forum.

Sounds like Jeep assist really looked after you with a tow and a rental, great to hear stories of jeep owners being looked after. Was it the puddle you drove through that affected the sensor or was it just timing? id imagine they are made to cope with some water on them.

Imagine the D40 Navara driver last year that hit a dip on an inland track a tad to quick and the water pressure pushed the lower radiator mount rearwards. This movement was enough for the fan to strike the radiator and destroyed it.

No roadside assist would get him off the island...only once he reached Inskip would they take over. With no other assistance...he drove it to the ferry and did terminal engine damage.

Once back at the dealer he was faced with over $8000 worth of damage and a protracted legal battle over who was responsible. The vehicle...too weak for what it was sold for...roadside assist....pay for a service and they wont provide.....or him for driving a damaged vehicle and causing more damage.

Anyway...glad it was just a CPS, easily fixed and you were well supported even on an island.

Matt.
That guy is a toolbag and the truth has most definitely been twisted.

I've seen this particular D40 sitting out the back of the dealer in question and you'd be shocked at the condition of it. This guy clearly gives his vehicles a hard time. After seeing the physical condition of the vehicle I am not surprised they have rejected his requests for compensation - no manufacturer would do that if they suspected the vehicle may have been abused or used in a way in which it was not intended (which is the way we use our vehicles if we go offroad despite the pretty advertising pictures).

not sure where the sensor is on your tj, but on the jk it's bolted to the top of the timing cover on the exhaust side, totally sealed from water. the electrical connector is open to the elements and if water was sucked in through the radiator fan as you splashed through a puddle it could get covered in water, although the connector has exceptionally good sealing on it. if water was able to get through the connector sealing it is possible for the sensor circuitry to be damaged. these connectors are all over the vehicle and are designed to keep out water from connections under the vehicle when it is is fording rivers or whatever. could have been a faulty connector seal. that would have caused the problem.

Yes I agree...he is total tool...but the point wasnt about him in particular. The issues that came about due to the damage the vehicle sustained..Nissan wouldnt get him off the island and his road-side assist wouldnt either. His choice to then drive the damaged vehicle to the barge and off caused the terminal damage....so is it his fault for driving it, personally I believe so. Then again, I have the benefit of training and without judging his skills or education (although how much common sense do you need to not drive a vcehicle with no cooling system) he had to get himself and his vehicle to a point where it can be recovered....was he left with any choice in his mind?

So all in all I believe the poster was very lucky that he was well catered for and the vehicle and he recovered back to a service agent with no real hassles, apart from the embarassment of Toyota onlookers!!

Every vehicle breaks down...even Toyotas....its how you handle the situation that determines how hard a time you have of it and how prepared you are for the inevitable.

Matt.
