I know this trail exists for horse and mountain bike and foot usage and as I don't know the front from the back of a horse, fall off push bikes and don't have hiking shoes, I was thinking how great it would be to have a simular thing for 4X4 vehicles. A 5000k trail that could be done in sections with access points to roads and services not that far away, but with the greenies wanting every existing track closed I guess I am two hundred years too late in my thinking.
Food for thought. Maybe a Tricentenial project.

From where to where are you thinking?
Its easy enough to drive all the way across the high country from not too far out of Melbourne all the way to the NSW border and beyond via tracks and dirt roads.

The bicentennial trail is for walkers horses and bikers only, so they dont have to contend with 4wders and dirt bikers. They are what all the other tracks are for.

I agree it would be a great thing to have but there would be a significant challenge at getting approval for something like that. I'm fairly sure that there would be a requirement for Federal funding. For things such as signage, facilities, etc. In addition you would have to have State by State approval as well.

Then again nothing ever gets started by only talking about it. I think you'd need to engage interest groups and come up with a proposal to take to local members. I think the Bicentennial Trail also crosses private land. An amended route to bypass these areas would be needed.

Yes as Richo says there are already secondary roads where you could achieve this. A solution would be to have a dedicated "route" that is marketed as something like a National Explorers trail. They have already done something similar up North with the Adventure Way. So it would be achievable as it is primarily a marketing task.

There are added economic benefits to the rural economy as well as the route could take in out of the way country towns.
