juat to add to that, i had an idler pulley go on my old xj and there was no tapping sound, just a bit of a bearing sound with the bonnet up and the occasional screach when i put my foot down and loaded the belt tension up. so i'm still a bit puzzled.

Thanks David

Yes, only thing that I can think of is the Tensioner Pulley. Went and had a look again and it's definately not spinning normally, it's actually deviating about 3-4mm on each rotation so it has to be rubbing/knocking against something causing the noise.

A little bit of a relief to be honest, was packing it that something serious had go. Although booked into the Dealership on Monday for them to confirm/fix.

Looks like the JK can't deal with the West Coast of Tassie!

Better clean up the engine bay before it goes in for the fix, it's filthy! Job for the weekend.........

Tass, if you think its the pully, rip the belt off and run the engine for a few minutes to see if the noise has gone. You wont hurt it if it is for only a short time.

Matt.

Or I just pull off the Pulley, I have a Workshop Manual.

However I am pretty sure that's what it is.

And it's booked for Monday, I imagine the whole thing will need to be replaced!

tassie be aware that the genuine jeep pulley will probably be around $300. if you do it yourself you can buy an aftermarket pulley for around $40. depends on whether you're under warranty i guess. cheers.
