I let the tyres down to around 17 (they were at 40 for bitumen). Yes I know what you mean about the speed on the sand, doesn't really like it. yes the tyres were spinning at times, and when the hot oil light came on it was working really hard. but couldn't back off or stop once started up the slope, as too steep and deep sand, and couldnt go back for any sort of a run up, as was getting bogged just backing up. we were trying to get off a beach before the tide came in. excellent experience but obviously I went without really knowing my vehicle, so time to learn.

i just rang the place i bought it from to see what service they did and they said they gave it a standard safety check i.e. just replaced a brake pad if it needed it etc and it wasn't a full 96,000 k service. i asked them to send me a service report so i know what they did, i.e. if they replaced the transmission oil or any filters.

17 is waay too high for boggy sand, you could have easlily gone down to 12-14 and still leave a few PSI incase you get really stuck. If your wheels are churning the sand, try dropping a few PSI when you get the right pressure the vehicle will just float along. You will see what I mean the more you experiment.
The only thing you have to be concerned about it hight speed cornering, not that a Rubi can really do that in lowrange but you still have to think about how you corner. Obviously the lower you go the more chance of rolling a tyre off the rim.
What tyres are you running, size and tread AT MT etc. The more aggressive tyre you have in sand usually the more they churn and dig down, the AT/HT at simliar size tend to do it easlier than MT etc.

Matt.

it's great to see your learning so much already, the number people will want to know on your tire btw will be along the lines of

245/75XR16
somethign close to that, or maybe even
31/10.5XR16

the next thing people will be asking is what do the words on the tires say,
eg;
yokohama - Geolander A/T
yokohama - Geolander M/T
Good Year - Wrangler M/T
Good Year - Wrangler A/T
BF goodrich - AT / MT

these are examples i think the more info you provide of the side of the tire will help people determine how your engine is running also these are just examples of some things people will be wanting to know ehehehe!!!

hope that helpped out a bit also

Welcome.

Being a 2007 you need to pay attention to the ESP system as well.

Make sure your dash chimes up with ESP OFF when you go into Low Range. If it doesn't you may need to hold down the ESP button in front of the gearstick for a number of seconds and wait for the ESP OFF message to appear on the dash (you will need the engine to be running and also preferably be at standstill).

Do the same for high range 4wd on the beach as well. Pressing the ESP button once only puts it into a "partial off" which is useful for snow covered roads and high speed off road driving such as on hard sand - not slugging up dunes and soft sand.

Being a Rubicon this might be a bit too slow but give it a go anyway, try putting it into 2nd via the gear selector to stop the transmission shifting (constant gear changes can cause excessive heat buildup). Turn Over drive off too. I know a number of Rubicon drivers don't bother with Low Range on the beach because its just too slow for them but be aware that using High range will work the vehicle much harder and possibly cause more frequent heat issues.

Keep in mind the computer will reset all your settings every time you turn the vehicle off and on again.

Have fun with it!!

ok will do, I was wondering about the ESP. It didn't chime ESP off when I put it in 4L. I pressed it once, and didn't hold it down, so will hold it next time for H4 and L4. I know what you mean, the L4 chugs along, so I drove in H4 most of the time.

re the tyres, thanks, even just knowing where to look for information is much appreciated. tyres are Goodyear Wrangler G17L M+S P255/75R17 113T
