Just looked at the link and searched but couldn't find any info re the inefficiency of inverters. Any idea what we are talking say an extra 10%?

Thank you gentlemen, you have confirmed my thoughts, I have always thought that the need an Inverter Generator to run electronic gear was a bit YK2, we used to plug all sorts of gear into gen sets back in my military days with no dramas, follow certain protocols of course, don't plug and switch everything on at once etc.
I actually use a small inverter to run the laptop from the 12V in car socket while on the road at maccas usually, got it free with laptop, easier to buy a new battery for it I suppose.

JJ was telling me that you can get 12v laptop chargers on Ebay. I still haven't looked as I just use an inverter if I don't have access to power. But I reckon it would be worthwhile.

When you consider that power stations just run huge 12 or so phase generators in the first place, and that is just bounced up & down using transformers to get it to the house...

Also, modern laptops use the power brick & battery basically as a UPS. 2140VAC to power brick, ~19VDC to laptop battery charging circuit, battery to 12VDV, 5VDC & 3.3VDC as required for laptop. So laptop on genny, not a problem.
