To be honest.... 5 hours isnt going to resolve the issue..

Id say a good chunk of WH CRDs I get in have some sort of harmonic resonance, rarely do customers notice or mention it. I rarely have the vehicle long enough to resolve the issue.

So far...
*Serpentine belt off - no apparent difference.
*Engine related, you know this because? - In neutral as you rev the noise increases in relation to rpm, correct? (which still includes the torque converter).
*As already established, no difference with serpentine belt off, so its not related to the A/C.
*Do you know if the sound is coming from top end of engine or bottom end? Not guessing but using a mechanics stethoscope, on the intake at each cylinder, along the sump on the bottom end (do be careful of voltage and moving parts, as I cant image 12volts into the ear would be a fun experience).

*What is the noise? fine whine, quiet, loud? can you compare it to any other sound?

Sorry no answers but it may help.

Regards

Hi DarrenR.
The fairly high pitched whine starts at about 1500rpm and builds up to peak at about 2100rpm where its worst then it seems to go.The electronic pickup was put on the trans and didnt pickup any whine, pickup on the oil filter casing had the same whine.!! They removed Ryco filter put in genuine and changed the oil still whining. This whine happens in all gears at the same revs plus rev it in neutral or park. You cannot hear it when you lift the bonnet, only inside.I took it to trans specialist who knows these W5A580 boxes said he didnt think it was transpump or torque converter but wouldnt completely rule it out.If you drive the vehicle you would think its a auto whine The dealer has spent a lot of time on this problem and has gone back to FC and asked them if it could be oil pump etc.Their response so far is its probably normal!!Driven two other WH nothing like this one.Woudnt mind but at 100kph in drive its right on the noise.I suspect its a really bad harmonic reasonance .Luckily this was noted while under warranty.

My thought so far..

If they are using an electronic stethoscope (I have a Snap-on one and it is rather awesome) then someone really should be able to pinpoint it a lot closer, as in...

Bring the engine up to the 1500 or so rpm when the noise is clearly there and then get under it...

*Transmission noise will be heard with the stethoscope on the transmission case, trans sump.
*Torque converter noise (or flex plate) will be heard from the bell housing, from engine bay back of engine on bell housing.

*Oil pump (I have my doubts) again will be heard on the engine sump.

And they have definitely removed the serpentine belt? and the noise is still there?
As I really am thinking water pump or one of the front bearings. Although I am assuming they have gone over the basics FIRST.....

The belt was off as I was there for over 5 hours with them.FC HQ are trying to say all WH diesels make this whine, some more than others. The two others I have driven do not make a whine like mine. They changed my 10-40 oil back to 10 -30 grade and it did seem a little better. However if you had it in a new vehicle you wouldnt accept the vehicle. The mechanic and service advisor all state that it shoudnt be there .Inside it can be heard ,open the bonnet,it cannot be heard!!
