Guys, Guys, Guys,

Reality is, dealers are sick of customers lying to them " i can get it for $10,000 cheaper at x,y,z" it is in human nature to be GREEDY! and customer will ALWAYS play off one dealer against another. the biggest miss conception is that there are thousands and thousands of dollars of margin on a car which must be competitive with todays internet retail market, with having 3-4 dealers within a 30 minute proximity of themselves.

My blood doesnt boil, im simply trying to shed some light on the fact that if we are human to them, they will be to us.. it works for me everytime.

but i also understand that there might be $5,000- $6,000 margin at a Recomended Retail Price on a new car. AFTER this is chewed up with vicious negotiation and dutch auctioning, there might be a $400-$900 rebate from Jeep for actually delivering a " unit".

SO you have just worked the sh*t out of your Salesperson, antagonising him, belittleing him, while he has to sit there with a smile on his face copping it. He will be telling you this is invoice price... and we all sit there going " Yeah Bullsh*t your still making 10k on this car... hahahah" and you have taken up an hour or so of his time.

You then proceed to go see 3 more dealers who get to about the same figure...

for a mere 400-800 possibly 1000 of real profit, the dealer needs to detail your new car, register and prepare it, pre deliver it, and then spend 1 hour handing it over with a smile giving you " customer service " and after all that headf*ck he will get his $80 minimum commision.... sounds like a good gig...

Or on the other foot, you could be nice, he will give you a solid discount anyway, if you just be honest and tell him that you have the intention to shop around if you dont receive a price that you think is a great discount or good deal.... the dealer will be too scared to loose your business, and will see the opportunity to earn you NOW as a customer and will 99% of the time smash out an amazing price, to stop you from shopping around and possibly never seeign you again...

( my brother is in the car industry.... this is not a guess ) - hope my 2 cents sheds a little bit of light on how car dealers are perceived to make MILLIONS of dollars per car sold .... reality is, they BEG and HOPE to god that you will come back for service, so the franchise can try make some money there...

This is not a Blood Boiling rant, rather a insight into how a salesperson can get pissed off with a customer, and NOT want to help them, if for thier measly 80 dollars they have to put up with this much sh*t. - if they are nice and humane about it, its a breath of fresh air, and people will actually bend over backwards to help you.... in the end... they are humans too, they have kids, families, households, and beleive it or not they do have VALUES!

The car industry aint what it used to be

Judging by many people's experience with Jeep I think customers are much more sick of dealers lying and being greedy. Let's think denied warranty claims, outrageous prices for parts and alleged false advertising re cameras on grand Cherokees. A car is going to be most people's biggest purchase except for property, I say screw them down to the lowest possible price.

I walked into the dealer that had what I wanted on the lot, it had been there for a month or so (probably the uneek colour combination isn't what the masses want, but I like it). I had my trade in and was reasonable about what I expected for the trade in as dealers are always lower than what you would get on the private market.

I discussed the price of the one on the lot, told them what the approximate numbers needed to be to do a deal. After a little negotiation over the next 24hrs a deal was struck. The deal was within a few hundred dollars of what I wanted.

As i found, the key is do your research and be realistic. I ended up with a good deal and saved money!

I used carsales.com.au and found the car we wanted. It had a few extras on too including the tow bar and redarc elec brakes.

I set a change over number in mind with the trade in, we talked about the numbers and agreed. It was very easy and I recommend Echuca Jeep for their service.

Once finance was sorted we met half-way (we live in SE Suburbs) signed forms and changed over cars. Very easy.

Do your research, be realistic and it will all be good.

Good luck with the purchase

I live in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. As a former Jeep salesman (1999-2003) and now owner (WK2 MY14 Laredo Diesel) I believe I understand both perspectives of buying and selling a vehicle. I didn't buy my vehicle from the dealer that I used to work for as the ownership had changed. I tested the vehicles that we wanted to choose from and came to the conclusion that it was going to be a jeep. At this stage I had an expectation of the price I was willing to pay for the vehicle. For my wife and I the colour combination was important so we called around to find the dealer that had the vehicle actually in stock. From there we sat down with the salesman and negotiated the price that we ended up with. We COULD have bought a different vehicle from a different dealer in a colour we weren't as keen on for about $1k less however were happy with our choice. I'm happy to recommend the dealer and pass on contact details via PM but I don't really want to put their details up on public display without their express permission. Much in the same way that I won't flame some of the tools I dealt with while buying this vehicle. Feel free to PM me if you're interested.

Cheers,

Matt
