Default Leaf spring shock and bump stop locations

Hey guys. thanks to the awesome welding of the previous owner I am cutting my rear shock mounts off my cj10 and starting again. I have some fox shocks to suit a tj which are too long so will probably use them. I am also missing some bumpstops completely . my question with leaf springs is how do I work out where full compression should be? Also can a shock be too long? they are too long for the tjs stock mounts and cant fit in the back without going through the floor which is against the rules. but on the cj I am making new mounts and have plenty of room to put them anywhere to suit any sized lift. luckily the front is bolt on so I can remake that at any time. but the rear I need to make before the chassis goes to gal which is before my lift and everything else unfortunately.
any help is much appreciated.
thanks.

All my mounts on my cj7 are custom, I just ordered weld on shock mounts and did my self, then replaced the old bump stops with bigger ones. With shocks yes you can get shocks that are to big (long) as you will have no up travel and the shock can be to short and have no down travel. Once you have the height right with the springs / shackles you need the shock to be setup in there middle so equal travel up/ down.

but I have no bump stops at all at the moment so dont have any guide to go off as to how far the axle moves. with coil springs I can work out how far they can compress but not sure with leaf springs how to work this out. once I know this shock mounting should be simple as well to have the shock almost fully compressed when the car is on bumps.

Measure your shocks fully compressed and fully extended, then find half that. That will be your shock travel. I have stock leaves spring over in my rear and the shocks max out before the springs will, then I have 4' bump stops. What lift are the springs you are using?

GQ shocks are perfect for a CJ with a 2-3"lift both on extension and compression but go hydro not gas filled. I have the sizing in my Larado build thread somewhere

I dont think ive explained myself very well. its the mounting location of the shocks and bumpstops I need to figure out on my j10 not the shock and bumpstop sizes.
The previous owners messed with the rear mounts so I am cutting them off and designing new ones.
