AW4's tend to run pretty clean as long as long as they are not wearing out and are slipping. Don't really need to replace the filter as most auto places I have dealt with will just clean the filter. I would test the solinoids using a multi meter. They need to have a certain resistance. Don't ask me what the measuerment is as I had someone do mine for me. The FSM will most likely have the specs.

I should be able to find the resistance on the web via google pretty easy. least I can test the shifter switch and the sols before I lug that massive gearbox out.

you think the NSS playing up could manifest in this way?

I wondered about the solenoids and have a spare box to pull some from, so can try them without maybe pulling the box completely.

We change the fluild regularly. haven't changed the filter in a while though.
I'll have a look to confirm that I still have some spares and get back to you.
As for the NSS, if it's playing up, ie not sending the correct signals to the TCM then anything is possible...

Before pulling the trans get an expert opinion. I did the former and spent $1800 recoing a trans that didn't really need it done . Its a pretty big job and you need a way of supporting the engine once the trans is out or it will end up damaging your fan or rad. I recently pulled my trans out and it came out three times all up and three time back in as I made a critical mistake when I reinstalled it the first time.

Check the NSS adjustment locking bolt to make sure it hasn't come loose. Thats the smaller bolt that locks the assembly adjustment, not the larger nut.

1) checked level > deemed to be good
2) check if issue disappears when shifting manually. If this is the case, then the cause is likely in the electrical side of things.
3) If so, check fuse in TCM, resistance in solenoids, etc.

I see more often mentioned a faulty NSS displays more issues relating to not starting in Park or Neutral, or no reverse lights, rather then shifting problems.
