Default rear diff ?

ok this might sound like a silly question but it has been a lot of years since the last time I played with diffs I think I know the answer but just want to know from someone that knows for sure. When you jack up the rear and have both wheels off the ground should both wheels spin the same (at the same rate in opposite directions) when spinning from opposite sides?
cheers

Short answer yes.

If the driveshaft is held still, as in in gear, then the pinion will be held still and the spider gears will rotate around it and the wheels will rotate opposite each other.

What if it is in neutral? and should they rotate at the same rate when spun from both d/s or p/s?

Yep. Even in neutral there is usually more friction involved in turning the driveshaft than the opposite axle so the driveshaft will most likely not move. Turning d/s or p/s should result (if driveshaft doesnt move) in the opposite wheel spinning at the same rate but in reverse.

If the opposite wheel is held still or has sticking brakes and the gearbox is in nuetral then the driveshaft will spin but at a much greater rate than the other wheel would have.

If you are talking about your TJ.. Ive been told all Aus. delivered TJ's came with D44 LSD rear diffs... If your LSD is working , the wheels should spin the same direction.

Thats only true if you have an open centre diff, if you have a LSD or locker like a detroit, both wheels will turn in the same direction unless your diff has a problem
