Default Getting a RWC in Vic/Australia....?

Looking at buying my first Wrangler and wanted some advice on getting a RWC in Victoria as a lot of Wranglers for sale are without a RWC.

Is it correct that to get a RWC the wheels cannot flare out more than 2 inches from the car...? and should a lift kit be fitted then it can't be lifted higher than 2 inches?

If this is the case how is that some Wranglers for sale do have RWC and have large wheels and lift kits larger than 2 inches? Is there a loop whole?

Cheers,
Sam

In my experience it's much less hassle buying a car with a RWC than one without simply because you may not not know how much more time, effort and $ you will need to fork out after the purchase. Lift and tyres are not the only mods that could be an issue with regard to obtaining a RWC.

there is nothing to stop you telling the seller that you want a mechanic to go over it before you commit to the purchase. Arrange for a roadworthy to be done & take the jeep to the place. It should only take an hr or so & then you know where you stand. it provides a very good negotiating point if it fails & you still want it. You dont have to tell the seller you have a roadworthy certificate if it passes.

Depends what you are looking for. Personally, I'd either buy something stock and modify it myself in which case there should be no major hassle with RWC. If you are buying something lifted etc... I'd say it's best to insist the seller gets the RWC. Mine only had minor things needing to be done, trans leak, small leak from brake master, cracked headlight and washer bottle. They were running around for weeks and probably spent a good $1500 on repairs before the RWC, then still had to fit a light on the number plate.

Also keep in mind, if you get a RWC check and something doesn't pass, you only have 7 days to go back and get that sorted or you start again and pay again. Let the seller deal with that!!

Agreed. Don't know about elsewhere but in QLD its actually not legal to advertise a registered vehicle without a roadworthy. Yet so many still do..

In Vic you can advertise but cant sell a registered vehicle without a roadworthy. Rego must be canceled. Normally what happens is the seller lets the new owner drive it home & maybe for a few days until he gets a roadworthy. He then returns the plates & the original owner cancels rego or just fills out rego transfer papers saying it was sold with roadworthy.
The legally correct thing would be for the new owner to go to Vicroads & get a permit for up to 28 days to give him time to get it roadworthy. They then collect the car with no plates from the seller.
There are restrictions on when & where you can drive the vehicle while on permit.
The permit is supposed to be issued by the registration authority in the state where the car is being sold from (state its registered in) this is negotiable though.
I got a Vic permit when I purchased my jeep in QLD & was able to drive it back to Vic through QLD & NSW.
Victoria has the best permit. It has the least restrictions. If you dont have the second page & are interstate or have an unknowing PD, you can drive at night. The daytime restriction is only shown on the second page & there is nothing else on page 2.

Hey Layback, I think it's more like the seller is meant to hand the plates into Vicroads until the buyer gets a roady, within 21 days. But the buyer has to get a permit to drive to get the roady. The buyer hands the roady to vicroads and they hand over the plates. The seller doesn't have to cancel the Rego if no roady supplied, just suspend it.
