Indeed: on a positive side, the more leaks, to more protection against rust. Maybe.... the engineers had this all planned in mind and they now turn out to be geniuses 20 years post date...

I guess I also really need to check I have 12 volts at the starter lead at the SM when I turn the key so I'm looking at putting a multimeter accross the terminals by running some leads up so I can monitor the current. Alternatively I could just pull the SM to check it & the solenoid.

I think it wouldn't hurt. You might find the brushes are fairly worn too. I went through two sets in mine one was a SH set though. It takes 1hr to do and at least then you can rule it out if its clean inside.

The main thing to verify is the trigger to the solenoid has 12v when this issue arrises, this will give you a pretty big clue if it's the starter motor or elsewhere such the NSS...

Update: The problem seems to be the ignition switch. Using an alligator clip lead, connected the ignition wire at the starter to earth via a multimeter as shown. First two attempts nothing. Third attempt 12v on the meter and starter engaged. Connected the lead from the starter to positive battery terminal and starter engaged first time. I've left the lead in place until I can rectify the ignition switch fault. The puzzling thing tho, is the problem is worse when the car has been standing in the heat. Is there something I am missing?

Now you need to test the inhibitor switch

X2 I'm leaning towards the NSS as its a very common issue. I've had to do mine three times in six years. Although the last time the NSS had completely failed for some reason. One quick check is to see if you have reverse lights.
