Default Wrangler for Tradie?

Hi all,

Looking at getting a new work bus and can't help liking the wranglers. I'm a builder as want to know if anyone else works out of one and if so pros and cons etc? Will get a set of ladder racks and have to pull a trailer more so than if I had a ute however will be able to enjoy the weekends a lot more.

Thanks in advance

Regards

I worked for a couple of years out of a diesel Defender installing electrical stuff. Pro... great on fuel, able to lock stuff up in the back. Con... pita getting ladders off the roof, unable to park in low car parks.
Fuel usage will be high towing a heavy trailer around the 'burbs.

Have a few builders getting round these parts and they use a larger trailer with everything in the lockup trailer including latdders. Only comment would be gearing... they are not really geared for towing so wiould suggest regearing .

Thanks for the advice.
Would look at a diesel Unlimited so fuel wouldn't be too much of an issue but space in back in concerning. I will look into the gearing.

Cheers again

Load space in the Wranglers is abysmal when compared to a ute or even a Defender. They are smaller inside than they look as the body is actually quite narrow and the floor pan is quite high. On top of that you lose a lot of space because of the roll cage. If you were working out of it work on the assumption that everything you need for work should be in the trailer and then just use the space in the car for smaller lightweight stuff. One positive of this is it'll take far less time to get the work stuff out of the car for the weekend off rad trips.

The diesel JKU should manage the job well enough, but I'd certainly be looking at an auto if you're towing that sort of weight regularly.

Payload is terrible. Roof rack won't be cheap if you want to carry a decent amount of weight. Rear door can be a pain especially with the soft top.

Diesel engine will be reasonable on fuel compared to most other 4wd wagons.

I hate to say it but unless you are going to use the live axle capabilities I would be buying something like a dmax.

A wrangler is an awesome car but definitely not as easy or economical to keep on the road everyday for work. Ie break something on the weekend you may struggle to have it ready for work on Monday.

I am not a tradie but if I was I probably would get pretty sick of the wrangler unless I was using it offroad lots to justify owning it.

I see a few around Perth set up with roof rack, ladders, trailer etc, but I certainly wouldn't do it.
As a matter of fact, I would be inclined to choose just about anything else.
Not knocking the Wrangler, it's simply a matter of "horses for courses.
