Default 1996 xj cherokee ball joints

hi, i have an xj Cherokee and i noticed that its got a front end clunk when going over bumps and breaking , i did a little investigation under the jeep tonight, everything was looking to be good until i got the the passenger side ball joints, i jacked the wheel off the ground and used a pry par to feel/ look for play, there is noticeable up and down movement in the ball joint, i cant look for side to side as i have a broken wrist and cant man handle the wheel but i do notice that especially when the jeeps in 4wd the knock is there when i take off.. im assuming thats because in 4wd it loads up the ball joints? anyway, does this sound like ball joints could be the cause of these issues? thank you.

'Hi mate yes your ball joints are stuffed. They are easy to change. If your in Melbourne i can lend you my ball joint removal tool. When i first got me jeep mine were gone and when i went to take off the hub the pin came completely out. It was the same as you the went up and down but not side ways.

I just finished pulling it all apart to inspect, and heres what i found.

Lower ball joint- no up and down moment under the force i can achieve with one hand, but is pretty dam easy to move it from side to side and around

Upper ball joint- no side to side moment that i can achieve with one hand, but theres over 1/2 -3'4 of an inch up and down movement

Does this help you guys? And its a 96 so it doesn't have the split ring adjuster.

The top "ball joint" isn't actually a ball joint, it is essentially at rotating pin that has vertical travel so it will move up and down....
