Default Offset v backspace

Sorry to bring up this old chestnut,
What offset and backspace do I need to fit beneath stock guards with 8" rims.
At present I run stock rims with 2" spacers and I'm just under the guards with 285x70 r17s

Just for clarity:

I assume you mean 2" spring spacers for the lift? (I doubt you would be under the guards if you had 2" wheel spacers! )

If you can measure how much space you have now, an online calculator like this one will help you work out what you need: Wheel Offset/Backspace Calculator

I just put on pintlers with 305 wide tyres - these wheels are an 8.5" with 5.2" BS and I'm out of the guards slightly. This backspace is out an inch vs stock. If you check out my thread just here you'll see nanook on the same rims with 265s also sticking out slightly. For your 285s not to exceed the guards I guess you'd need a BS a little closer to stock, or have a look at the fender spacers he pointed me to.

Well for me it's like this.
I have 4.75bs and my 285/70/17 tyres still stick out a bit.
I can't use more, such as std rims because the tyres rub on stuff under certain circumstances, both front and rear, due to my suspension components and setup.
The point I try to make is that it is the least of ones problems. That can be easily and simply rectified.
Limiting your suspension and tyre options by trying to work in milimeters to keep the tyres squeezed inside makes little sense to me.
Set your machine up and then worry about the plasticy cosmetic stuff.
Probably a good idea to have it done before you are issued with a sticker though!

Nope 2" wheel spacers with stock rims my tyre wall is about 10-15mm outside the rear guard, with my tread inside by a hanny fair. Check out the pics in my mudflap post.

I'm looking at a set of 8" rims with a 5 backspace, I like the 285s x 70s but would love some 265x75s if I could find any, that combo would hopefully keep me about the same as what I have, I think.

Fair enough! I have a 2" lift with 285/70s on OEM rims. Wouldn't have thought spacers would still fit!
