do crank sensors normally die or just quit
or do they gradually die?

Crank sensors can die suddenly but more often a slow death. Symptoms are usually a hard to start when hot condition. They can be fine when cold.
They have a life span and heat usually gets them in the end.
Remember you have a cam position sensor too.

Sounds like fuel pump to me and its losing pressure. Try turning the key on and leaving it for 10 seconds to pump up pressure before starting.

If it's starting fine (consistently) when at full operating temp then it's most likely not either of the two CPS's (Cam and Crank), these two sensors will give pretty much the same symptoms, ie hard to start when at full temp.
If it's only at completely cool temps, ie not run for a day or so check the fuel pressure as Bill suggested by priming the pump for a few seconds and if it still has issues prime the pump and then check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail by removing the plastic cap and depressing the centre pin on the valve, if good fuel should spray out, if not good it may just dribble.
Be aware that the 94 is OBD1, it has a fuel pressure regulator on the injector rail that can fail....
