From memory I think it was one of those snap on block connectors ?.....like a plastic hook on the side of the block connector to initially stop the connection coming apart....but came off pretty easy.
I may have a different connector/plug than your one.

Firstly thanks for the pix and the instructions. There are two plugs on the transfer case - as you point out the correct one is on the top, not the side of the T/C.
I removed the plug and cleaned it with CRC, and then reconnected it. Problem solved. It was probably just a dirty fitting.
