The thermostat is moulded into the plastic housing. These housings have an oring seal. However these plastic housings also warp and are a noted leakage area even when the thermostats are ok. they do not leak when hot only when motor is cold , I had to remove mine twice.Once to put a new oring in .Didnt stop the leak then again I put a smear of sealant around the face. aftermarket units can be bought from US for around $120.00 landed
Sparesbox here in Aus has Gates units for $72.00.NB However check to see if these are for 3l diesel. OEM 3 litre diesel Part number is 68253514AA

It's a poor design at a ridiculous price.

How hard can it be to devise a simpler, more reliable and cost effective thermostat set up? I'm a real Jeep advocate, but this is an example of how the silly buggers let themselves down badly.

Just a thought on things to do different if you ever find yourself in a similar situation again. When the coolant level light comes on or you are aware that you are loosing coolant for whatever reason ignore the temperature gauge and assume your engine is critically hot. Reason being whitout knowing exactly how much coolant is left in the system your temperature gauge will lie to you to the point of being completely useless. Temperatures sensor determinds the temperature of the coolant by being immersed in coolant. When the coolant level drops below the sensor which is near the top of the motor because that is the hottest area and where it needs to read it wil kind of hover around the same temperature it was at until a blast of steam comes roaring past it causing it to way way to late jump up suddenly. When you are making steam in the cooling system your coolant level is already below your cylinder head and while your cylinder heads are above the coolant level they will spike beyond critical temperatures in seconds.
