You shouldn't need those expensive products Mark. What if you blow a hose or get a fast leak.. $150 on the ground.

Interesting to see how your ZJ clutch works?? but if your temps are still up, then something is a bit off, and sounds like it has been for a while.

If the temps are still up, try a pressure test. I used a stant radiator cap that is only $6 from Rockauto. Its the LeverVent style. Keep the cap on tight, but open the vent on the cap. Normally, pressure would vent off into your overflow bottle.. but i took the rubber hose off the bottle and put a bicycle valve in there with a jubilee clip to keep it all tight. Then i used a bike pump that had a pressure gauge on it to pump it up to about 13 psi. I did this at night, and used a $2 Ebay black light to shine around the engine bay looking for leaks. Found my leak from a heater hose.. the one that went to my LPG system. Coolant glows in the dark using the black light!!

Anyway, what i am saying is you may have a pressure leak somewhere that stops your cooling system performing well.

Also, have you considered that your sensor might be wrong? The sensor for the guage is generally the one near the firewall. Yours might be different, so check, but might be worth changing out.

Small order from Rockauto would be a Stant LeverVent 16 psi cap, and a sensor for the gauge.

Also, do a flush again.. you can use Tony's special ingredients, or just do a simple one.

Perhaps also look at the thermostat again while you are there.

Good luck with the old girl..

Two days until my beast goes under the knife..

Cheers,

The products are available from Bunnings and cost less than $100 for 2 litres of each. They are much stronger than any commercial engine flush products. Themostat needs to be out and rad hoses filtered with stockings

I would also spend $35 on a BAFX OBD2 reader from USA (as many OBD2 readers wont work on 1996 vehicles) (was $35 when I got one..Oz dollar is now weaker)

This will give you a very accurate reading of temperature, as well as access to fuel trim & O2 live data, apart from code reading any fault

you need an Android phone to display the live data
