Default V8 or Diesel 2012-13 Grand Cherokee Overland

Hi Everyone,

I am looking to purchase a 2012 or 2013 Overland and I am looking for some advice.

Now, I have been a Holden V8 Guy my whole life (pushing 50 now) and I really do love V8's However I am considering the Diesel V6 3.0 litre variant of the overland because I have heard stories that its almost as strong as the V8 version, but with the benefits of being a Diesel.

Any thoughts on this issue?

Thanks!

The diesel does pull hard but the way I see it is the only benefits are better fuel consumption, slightly cheaper rego and possibly cheaper insurance but, then you have all the other downsides of a modern diesel, DPF, EGR, expensive repairs if issues arise.
If I were you I'd go the Hemi.
No doubt you will get strong opinions from both sides on this one but ultimately go with whatever makes you happy.

Had the same dilemma.
Told wife had to have diesel for towing.
Wife test drove diesel , made me drive it past her , so she could hear how rattlely it was.
Said , ok if thats what I have to have.
She kept dropping comments over the next few days.
I finally said , go and test drive the bloody V8 then.
She rang me from the test drive and said listen to this , as she took off.
She said , you can shove that rattler , I'm getting a Hemi.
I asked a mechanic mate which would last longer servicing with just oil and filter.
He said Hemi.
Our budget didnt stretch to a 2014.
Diesel parts only start on Rockauto from 2014 and up.Which is when the diesel become available on American domestic market. This was a big thing for me.You really dont want to be buying parts off Jeep Australia

Clearly you are not a diesel person.
Unless you have been driving diesels all your life, I have, you wont like one.
The old smokey rattlers are different to modern ones though a few general rules still apply.
If most of the driving is going to be short city trips, stay away from diesels.
If you have been driving petrol cars all your life you will have developed a certain mindset & it is not compatible to diesel ownership.
If its going to be the wife's run about most of the time, dont get one, happy wife~ happy life!
If you want to use it for trips under 20km most of the time, dont get one.
If you like tinkering with cars but dont have experience with diesels, dont get one.
Unless you are going to be doing long trips towing for most of the time, more than 50% of its use, dont get one.

I started with a Mercedes 300D about 40 years ago & would never own a petrol car now. Back when I got it most said I was mad, 2,500,000km later with no problems, most were on their 10th statesman or fairlane. The rattly oil burner had done its job.
The modern ones do try & imitate petrol engines, reduced vibration, less lag, less noise, etc, but you still have a diesel with all is quirks.

I have always been a diesel person too and owned a 2012 crd wk2 which was a great car and and I loved it and, I actually like the way modern crd's drive better than petrols. I just think they've lost the simplicity and reliability that they used to have.
20 years ago 250000km on a diesel was nothing, nowadays I'd be worried about owning one with more than 200000 on the clock, once you do get up there, things like new injectors which will require changing, can set you back quite a bit.
I know petrols also have a lot of crap on them nowdays too but not to the extent of diesels.
But at the end of the day it's whatever best suits your needs.

Drive one of each, see which you like best! The Diesel will use less fuel, has magnificent torque for towing, but costs more to service and repairs could be very costly. What are you going to use it for and how long do you intend to keep it?
As these cars get older, they will get to the point where it would be unviable to spend big dollars on repairs. On the other hand, second-hand parts will be more available.
If you're not towing much or using a lot of fuel anyway, you might be better off with a V8 or V6 petrol.
