Default Increased Performance Diesel XJ

Just a general question

I was talking to a guy who has just bought a new 6.2L V8 turbo diesel :D for his Patrol and he was saying that they set the turbo to 8 pound boost while it was run in. Once the engine and turbo were run in, they could tune the turbo up to a 30 pound boost!

Does anyone know if this can be done to our turbos, can they be tweaked for better performance??

Cheers

Hi Fud,

I am told there are lots of ways to improve performance. Haven't done much myself yet other than intake snorkel so can't comment on how much better.

1) Put on bigger dia. exhaust pipe. Heaps of back pressure on XJ diesel easily fixed. You shouldn't lose torque when you do this on turbo diesel, you gain some as turbo spins up better.

2. Intake bigger, fit snorkel with ram head, bigger air filter and especially a bigger intercooler. Lots of custom work here but more air == more power for diesel.

3. Take your Jeep to Berrima Diesel. I can't remember who told me they do a job on the injectors and pump to increase power. Maybe ask them direct.

4. Fit an aftermarket chip. Powerchip make one and claim 102kw and 357nm. Not bad for 2.5L oiler :D :D

see:-

I think they turn the turbo boost up when they fit the chip.

All of these changes probably improve fuel consumption too.

Just check you haven't got the accelerator pedal mount bent. Every XJ diesel I have seen has lost the last 1/3 of accel travel.
Remove pedal assembly, straighten the mount then put a block under the mount so it doesn't bend next time you push the pedal hard.

When you increase power you might consider a bigger radiator too. Extra power on a turbo motor usually means more heat too.

Another way to get a little more power might be to try running a really big capacity radiator and fit electric fans then remove engine fan. That huge thing gobbles up plenty of kw most of the time doing nothing.

Hi,

Bent rocker? Sounds like Jimmy Barnes to me.

Never heard of that one before. Usually push rods bend long before rockers. Just one or all?

Usually the only time something like this happens is when someone has hydro-locked the engine but maybe a valve stuck or maybe hydraulic lifter seized. Weird really, only ever heard of push rods bending.

Been through any deep water?

Then again, I never heard of heads being so soft the gasket makes them unserviceable either.

Guess you have two firsts now.
