Welcome mrZ

The XJ's are very capable four wheel drives. The're generally fairly reliable but parts can be a bit pricey. The usual upgrades would be advised to tyres & suspension. My 97 XJ performed faultlesly for 6 yrs & 110,000 kms.

Mate the question I would be asking, is why is your mate selling it? Does he know of some problems but has not told you about. The only thing that would be of concern is the number of K's its done.

I know with the '97 XJ I had, the problems started at around 150,000 K's. The main one that concerned me was the wheel/axle bearings and noise in the gearbox. It had a bad knock in the rear end a few oil leaks. All in all it was a great Jeep.

Not knowing your location, but in Sydney last week I seen some good Jeeps for around the 14K mark. See if you can find a Jeep dealer in your area just to check out what on sale and to pick up some info. Also try the trading post at the web site.
