A 97 is a bit rich at $18k (unfortunately).
Red rat is slightly wrong describing the gearboxes - the TJ's in australia started with the AX-15 (not Pooguet), then changed to nv3550...anyways generally the AX-15 is AMPLE strong enough.
Also the hardtop is classified as weather protection only - and rightlyfully so, it's not structural. The softops are good weather protection, bu a bit noiser and the zippers are prone to wear.

Anyhow I suspect no matter what one you choose you'll be a happy camper

Mate,

a couple of months back I was in the exact same position your are in now, I previously owned a bundy (good car except too damn slow!!!!) and had my eyes set on a TJ to cut a long story short (looking at so many second hand ones etc....) I decided to buy new (or ex daimler chrysler demo) and mate having a new car is awesome worry free driving you will never look back IMHO!, although there is one major problem with owning a TJ apart from the fuel and that there are so many damn accessories/mods for them and deciding which one to buy anyway goodluck and I am sure you will make the right decision which ever way you go

Cheers

Dan

Adam - they are not all the same cars. For example; No. of gears, charcoal canister location, gear boxes, seats, instruments, ignition systems, exhaust, even down to vented tail gates, blah, blah, blah...most importantly they do not all come in the same colour...eg. mine is red

I picked up my brand new 05 TJ about 1 month ago, black, dual top, I am so stoked you have no idea. I have wanted a TJ for a long time! Once I build my funds up I am going to start modding. So you could say Im all for new or as close to new as possible, I think going for a stock TJ aswell to avoid dodgy mod's etc is a good idea. But whatever blows your hair back....(no top on my TJ, cruising on a beach for me)

Congrats on the 05, had my first day of driving mine around today. As happy as the preverbial pig, doesn't exactly blow my hair back... I shave my head! Missed out on an 04 hard top today on ebay, will continue the search.
