Default Dont Assume Anything

I spent this morning playing around with my XJ to see if I could find that damn whine. I did the power steer pump and flushed the fluid. Still there. I then changed the alternator even though it didnt sound like a bearing. Still there. I then decided to do the idler pulleys and guess what. Still there

Turns out the bearing on the air con compressor is shot. When it is not engaged its whining and it shuts up when the compressor is engaged.

I suppose its a case of dont assume anything with a Jeep im happy though because my mates going to put new bearings in it and theyre not overly expensive. FYI Jeep doesnt stock the bearings but any air conditioning company (highgate is who I went through) has them in stock and being that they are a sanden, the front bearing is $76 although my mate thinks he can get a better price because he buys more off them. Still Im not bitching at $76 and I know everything else is spot on now.

Hey Steve that sounds expensive to me, I usually use Skefco bearings but any bearing mob should do, as the refrigeration guys have to source their bearing stocks from somewhere!
cheers

Do you know if they have to regas your ac system when they put it in or is the compressor left in place while they change it? Is that price fitted or supply only? As you can probably guess mine needs replacing too

I had mine done recently - you can replace the bearing on the jeep but it takes a little longer - its faster to reclaim the gas and pull the unit off as there is more room to pull the bearing off, I paid $200 in Sydney that got me new bearing and regas incl labour it took longer to get the bearing than it did to install.

Before changing the bearing the XJ sounded like it had a supercharger - now its super quiet, miss the supercharger though.
