Well, the deed is done! I've got a 5 speed auto! I am pretty happy with the outcome. As mentioned, the obvious results were lower rpm's on the highway. About 1700 @ 100, 1900 @ 110, & 2100 @ 120. What really got me was the 'pick-up' from 100kms/h. There's a definate gain in passing power & it feels like there is a higher top end. Not that I like screaming down freeway @ 140, but if I wanted to, I reckon the engine wouldn't be sweating nearly as much as before the 'flash'.
Too early for fuel comsuption, but its pretty obvious that a savings would be gained at highway/freeway speeds. It barely breaks a sweat @ 100-110
I even reckon that the shifts from 1-4 aren't as 'jerky' as before, but that could be me. It feels like it should have felt - if that makes sense?
The downside - It cost me $195!!. While I took the advice from previous posts -ringing around, questioning the time, etc., I finally got the sh*#ts, with dealers/service depts not knowing about it. The only other place I found besides York Motors, was Scuderia Veloce Motors Chatswood who quoted me $150, but the service advisors (foreman wasn't avail) response was "Yeah, I'm pretty sure we can do that, we've got all the equipment - $150". I was already booked for York & wasn't entirely confident with his response, so I thought I would try my haggling skills, seeing as MRGC paid $66 5mths ago. Plus, they obviously have done it a few times.
I presented a good case - previous flashes, Jeep club (repeat business), Ausjeep forum, etc. New management & prices were his response. I didn't put up much of a fuss & just copped it.
To their credit, York were cool to deal with - professional, etc. They even washed my rig! I also enjoyed perving on their range of Unlimted JK's. I wonder if one could shoehorn a 4.7L in one of those suckers?
