Default 1981 V8 cherokee...ignition timing & LPG

just a note to other LPG convertees. having read that LPG requires more spark advance for optimum combustion, i have set the timing on my cherokee to about 12deg (maybe a bit more, but hard to see that darn timing scale up underneath) at idle. boy did that make a difference to this cars ability to pull from no or slow speed, up hills etc ie high load, slow engine speed situations.

i have not done a highway fuel consumption comparison, but irrespective of that, the car is much more satisfying to drive.

hi kev, my jeep is a running vehicle and i had fiddled with the timing some time back. as i have only just discovered and joined the group, so i thought i would bless it with my secret knowledge

the distributor i am looking for is to be used for a little ignition system project.

re the timing: what do you reckon it could be set to? i didnt want to advance it any more lest it knock on those (thankfully rare) occasions when switch over to petrol.

regards

If the timing chain is old it will be stretched and therefore the timing will be a nightmare to set.

thanks for the suggestion: as it happens, the motor has an almost new timing chain. but dont forget that when you check the timing, it is the crank you are looking at, so even if the timing chain is stretched to buggery, if the timing light says X deg advance, it IS X degrees. even with the old chain in place, the timing was steady, so the ignition timing wasnt a problem.
