Default reading codes

just read your other thread about being charged to read the codes...

if it comforts you, toyota were the same, in that they had a fixed fee of - you guessed it - $130 to quote. i assume that is effectively like a callout fee for a home repair. it bears no relationship to the time involved.

if you have a manual, it should/might tell you how to read the codes without even using a scanner. it only involves shorting two of the terminals in the scanner socket, then turning on the ignition. on the corolla, the CEL then flashed in two sequences which together indicated the two digit code.

obviously no help with that now, as you have the codes! so that is just for the benefit of anyone reading later

regards
alexander.

A rule of thumb when getting multiple fault codes is to look at first one logged, other codes are often a sympton of the fault that triggered first code.
Before spending lots of $ at dealer its worth making sure all the sensors (ones related to codes in particular) have good connection at plugs.Just disconnect plug ,spray with wd40 & reconnect.Youd be amazed how often this fixes problems.

Thanks guys, all very helpful.
I managed to drive home today. CEL was on when I started up this morning and remained on throughout about an hour or so of driving in traffic. As soon as I reached a highway and was able to speed up, the CEL went out (at about 100km) and didn't come back on for the rest of the trip. Hooray.
Car drives okay and cruises at 110km easily enough. Engine sounds a bit throaty during accelaration but that's just the diesel I think.
I shall take your advice on board about the first code and the WD40.
Thanks again.
