Default Transfer Case

A few week-ends ago whilst driving off road(nothing hard core) a clicking type noise was noticed coming from under the car.
At first I thought it was a branch caught underneath. The noise speeds up and down with the revs of the motor/drive shaft. My mechanic has located the sound coming from the transfer case and has thought that maybe part of the chain inside has come apart and hitting the inside of the casing

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of problem, in particular with 02 KJ And what, if any, damage could happen if it is driven until repairs are carried out

Yes, I have had this happen with my transfer case in the XJ. I replaced the chain and it was gone, so definately a possibility. However this was after about 8 years of moderate to hard 4wding. This leads me to think that you would have had to done a lot of wheelin for this to happen! Hope I have been helpful....

Thanks for your imput. Well my history of the KJ is as 2nd owner 3 yrs ago at 60k now 162k. In that time I have toured and had week-ends of easy to moderate off roading. However, I have pulled a 13ft pop-top van through the Gawler & Flinders ranges plus various short off road/Beach camping trips. I have only just replaced the Uni joints thinking that may have been the problem....Turned out to be a separate issue.

Can you give me a bit more information on what was involved in replacing the chain e.g. any other associated parts required , costs , parts sourced from etc.
