Thanks folks - I know it's Torxs and I've already wasted money on the Torx bits (several years ago) - an Allan key arrangement won't work - it's a bolt head I'm talking about - like something you'd stick a normal 1/4 inch socket on - but it's a f'n Jeep so that wouldn't be too normal would it (sorry if I'm sounding P!ssed off at the moment - but I am). My current quote is $40 for a set (I only want one poxy 1/4 inch Torx socket (bolt head type).
Gotta say, I'm looking forward to a soul-less Prado as soon as I can afford one.

Cheers ... Mark

There is male and female Torx bits but it sounds like you already knew that, try a pair of vice-grips or weld a "common" bolt or nut on to it and replace the rooted one with a "normal" hex head one.

I never had any trouble getting mine off when I had to, I was pretty sure I just used a small socket. Changed vehicle now so can't check.

some socket sets (especially the cheaper brands) come with these.
If not vice grips ,as mentioned allready.
Btw, Toyota's have there fair share of dumb ideas too as you will find out soon enough.

Thanks for all the replies folks and sorry for being a bit grumpy but the Jeep's been misbehav'in a bit lately. The gas struts are in and now I have to watch out for cracking my chin when I open the tailgate (Thanks Gas Struts Guys) - ended up at Mt Barker 4X4 - great service & got the job done while I had other things checked out.
BUT - it seems the TransferCase is about to sh!t itself. I get a loud (and I mean loud) whine (sounds a bit like me really!! - I originally thought it was tyre whine but just kept getting louder) over 40 kph that disappears when I throttle off. Why the T/C? - the check on the axle, hub to hub, including the diff, suggests there's no problems. So it's off to the Auto trans chaps to see what's what.. If anyone has any bright ideas about the problem, I'm all ears.
Cheers ... Mark
