Lurking in this forum has been an exercise in frustration over the last couple of months - JK-Forum.com has been a
much more constructive place to visit
This phenomenon of what happens when a manufacturer seeks to appeal to a much wider market segment is by no means unique to Jeep. I went through the same thing with the introduction of the Evo motor in HD in '84, the old die hards said they weren't REAL Harleys, but most of them eventually came around. Remember the 240Z? A real enthusiasts sports car, gradually it got bigger and softer and lost the way. Same happened to some extent to MX-5 - the '89 NA had no air con or power steering, built by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. Later iterations gradually lost that raw feel, due to two reasons. The general motoring public demand more gadgets in their cars, and some changes are mandated by safety legislation.
So, it's a simple matter of survival. Any manufacturer that caters only for the hard core enthusiast is bound for failure. As for forum conduct, a bit more moderator intervention here would be a good thing IMHO. If the JK section continues as it has been, I'm sure I won't be the only one unsubscribing...
BTW, I love the JK - I came to my first Jeep with fairly realistic expectations, and have no complaints whatever.
