So I recently bought a KJ 2006. and it does not have a towbar on it. Do I need to take it in to get checked out before getting a towbar and where do i take it? in Brisbane.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve, The short answer is that if you go in to any jeep dealer to have it looked at without one they will fit a useless brace (as per the images from camper in the thread above). There's no point getting it if you want a tow bar. Purchase and Fit a towbar first and then they will check it for compliance. I have one for sale. Please see the link below. This way, if it doesn't comply they will replace with a genuine towbar not a useless brace. Pm for details.

I had the recall checked , if the kj was fitted with then it needs to be checked to see if the fitting will clear the petrol tank . after sitting around drinking there coffee that tastes like it was strained through a live cats blurter , they told me it was ok . if it was not , and fitted by jeep then they would of fixed for free , if it was a aftermarket one then I would of had to pay . maybe just another way for jeep to make sure it is a jeep genuine fitting , but I believe it is a safety thing so if you get hit from behind the gas tank doesn't rupture and EXPLODE. (something to do with the height)

New recall letter arrived today - Wonder what they need to inspect this time?

I'll tell you what Jeep, I'll do it for you:

I DON'T HAVE A F#$%EN TOW BAR

Not sure how you missed that the first 2 times!

Yep got that one last week. What I got from that letter was

"We're letting you know there's an issue with your airbags, however we don't currently have the parts so We'll send you another letter in a couple of months to tell you to book your car in for an inspection to see where We need to fit the module and then We'll send you another letter for you to arrange a time to have it fitted"....

I'm guessing that recall should hopefully be completed by xmas but who knows?? after all - It's a JEEP thing, We (the customer) wouldn't understand!

The issue isn't whether you have a tow bar or not. If you dont have a tow bar, they want to put 1 on! Well, a lump of channel, anyways...

.We also got the new letter.
Of perhaps a little interest, I also found this: (pdf file) : http://www.pvsheridan.com/RCORRD-13V252-0198.pdf

And the part numbers: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...V252-5228P.pdf
contains pictures of Special Service tools used during inspection....

It's from their head office and is presumably, addressed to their US dealers, but I wonder if the US cars are getting a proper tow hitch installed, or just that crappy bar that I see being fitted here.

In the UK, KJ's with a rejected tow bar is uninsurable.
