Those refs need some coaching. FIFA should launch a program of lessons learned to fix it.

In any case I love the Socceroo fighting spirit

Australia was never going to win over Italy. Match fixing in the World Cup is notorious and I wouldn't be suprised if Guus now has a new Chalet waiting for him. I personally found the referree's decisions in all four games Australia played fairly predictable - it's all part of the 'world game' which is why has soccer has never really taken off in Australia.

Australian's prefer sports which aren't influenced by bad decisions from one official. This is why there are multiple umpires and video referee's in our most popular sports.

Take off your blinkers Zorba - international soccer has been riddled with corruption for decades.

Match fixing? Of course there is! Half the Italian team is under investigation for matchfixing their club games - what makes you think that they'd stop just for the world cup. Wake up to yourself.

Predictable? With only one umpire trying to watch over a fast moving game, it is predictable that that person will make mistakes. AFL addressed this issue by having multiple umpires and giving sideline umpires more authority. ARL addressed this with video referee, as did cricket and rugby union. Even tennis has two people watching the line calls and then even added electronics to help make accurate decisions.

A professional sport needs a professional approach to minimise human error. Given that each world cup umpire is running around with an ear piece stuck to his head, doesn't it make sense for a second umpire who has access to video footage replay to be able to assist in the decisions? FIFA won't do it of course - something as progessive as this idea might interfere with the match fixing that's going on.
