Thats not how to do it firstly you need to find out at what volume level your head unit starts to clip, until you know this it is just a guess but basically you want the head unit volume at a higher clean setting to get the best SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio).
Do a google search for amplifier level settings....you will get lots more info then you will be able to digest.....

So what it seems is I need to set the work out on the unit where the loudest is without the amp before it clips. Then I need to adjust the gains so that I get the peak clear noise level. Now remembering what I used to have it set on 18 months ago before I had an amp, as connecting up speakers to it without an amp will be a real challenge as the speaker wires are all under the seat.

I am heading down to pick it up in a minute so when I get home I will have to see if I can google my new deck and see if anyone has posted something about its level before it clips.

Thanks JJ

Regards A

it has rained that much and i have used my wipers basically non stop for about 11 days and now they only have one speed and thats supper slow, and makes very strange noises.
also super slow works when its conventent for it.
went through a big puddle of water, water all up the windscreen, i had to hit the brakes and stop as the wipers didnt work.

oh well lucky i have a spare wiper motor in the shed.

Personally I've always tuned the amp gains at 3/4 head unit volume. This gives breathing room in either direction and is rather unlikely to cause unnecessary clipping. Rarely am I running my system at even 3/4 volume as I find bits start to fall off at this point

Thats one way, not necessarily the correct way but it will work reasonably well.
When I want to set mine properly I use a CRO, a signal generator and a cd that I created with some specific tracks that I use for setting the levels driving a load bank, to keep the missus happy....

I did a bunch of reading when I was setting up the amps in my other car, basically the conclusion I came to was to set the headunit to the maximum volume that you'd listen to it and then adjust the gains up until you get slight distortion then wind back slightly
