Well why lower NOx? Why would manufactures spend so much in R&D to improve Emission control systems on engines if it wasn't essential.

NOx in older cars was not so much of an issue, these lean machines Pump it out.

NOx is on it's own is poisoness, but once it reacts with sunlight and other organic matter it's Deadly.

The rest of the population can do their bit, but a select few who class themselves as higher than (seemingly not very socially conscious) choose not to do so.

The cons far out weigh the possitives to this little project, unless you consider the small power gain worth more than that of current and future generations health

Ignorance is Bliss?

EGR systems increase particulate emissions and to combat that particulate filters are fitted, but we here in australia don't have P/F fitted, why not?
So therefore switching off the EGR should provide a cleaner burn, less particulate matter which is mainly carbon and we all know the link of Carbon and global warming , be more fuel efficient too, how can that be bad for the environment? many believe that the environmental impact of EGR (Particulate matter & More fuel burned through less efficient engines) outweighs the NOx emission reductions.

Im not saying you should or shouldn't do this it's up to the individual to do their homework.
MCJK obviously has his strong views thats fine, but at the risk of starting world war 3, uuuum- stop telling us what we should be doing

If we really want to limit emissions and better the air we breath then get on a bike or walk or take public transport to work. Those "seemingly not very socially conscious" people blocking up the freeways with there cars pumping poisons gasses in the air get to me. Ive owned my jeep for 2years and only done 17,000klm because i dont drive it to work, i'd say im far from Ignorant MCJK

EGR for Diesels is not all its cracked up to be.

MCJK, do you reckon that without Proven oil separator and with EGR on, there wouldn't be any need to clean the intake manifold on this engine, say in 70-100K kms?

there would be absolutely no, i repeat NO need to clean the intake manifold kin that time period. 70 to 100k, good god. that happens in very old oil burning and guzzling engines. but blockage of egr sytem can happen much earlier, in any time frame. egr valves can be faulty, muck can build up and block the system. not possible to put a time frame on it. but an engine in good conditin where all parts are perfect and develop no faults would not clog in that time frame probably.

driving habits also affect egr buidup. an engine run constantly in city traffic at low revs and low load will build up muck in a very short time. diesels are designed to be run over long distances carrying light to medium loads to get maximum life and benifit of the diesel technology.
