Its not about how long it will take to pay off. Its about convenience.
We tow with our jeep, and I don't want to stop every 400km to fill up
so in my eyes when I fill up once it has payed for it self.

There is no payoff as such, it's about what you want from your vehicle.
I want a super capable tourer, while the JKUR is super capable, it's shortcomings are range, which is compounded by limited room to haul stuff. By increasing the range by 60+% without changing cargo capacity the aux tank goes some way to addressing both issues.
I now have a rig that id be comfortable tackling the simpson or cape York in.

I do wonder if it is worth it.
For that cash I could buy a roof rack and chuck some jerry's on it. I don't mind pulling over to pour some more fuel into the tank.
Decisions decisions .......

There's only one way to solve this, someone should buy me one and I'll drive mine around till we get a break even reading

The difference between theory and practice is.. In theory there is no difference.

I have a Gobi already, it gets filled pretty quickly.

Perhaps i just take too much gear with me and should be looking to rationalise that.

I camp with up to 4 people in the one vehicle for up to 7 days so the rack takes-
2 tents, 4 sleeping bags & mattresses, toilet tent, 4 chairs, table, chainsaw, gas bottle

In the rear i fit
fridge or esky, stove, cooking gear, food, 20-30l water, lanterns, clothes bags, fishing gear, recovery gear & compressor etc etc
