Looks like bjm has a possibilty there Le Cheese...google gave me everything from the fact that these engines are also in Maseratti Gehelleti (or sumtin like that...wont be buyin a Masserati so if its spelt wrong duznt matter) to all the HP ratings n emissions bits fitted to the US Ecodiesel...but...a schematic diagram of the engine was not found....thinking bjm has your answer as its a 'common' problem from his input...will have to check mine !

Doesn't look to be coming from the thermostat housing - BUT that little black tube IS part of the water pump, and is called the 'water bypass tube'. Has two little o-rings that apparently can go bad. Good news is that it really isn't a major, bad news is I still have to wait another week til it's in for a big service where I'll get it fixed up.

Cheers for pointing me in the right direction BJM and Farwest. Just when you think that surely you know just about everything that can go wrong in these beasts, something different pops up.

[QUOTE=LeCheese;1689980]Update on the coolant - seem to have found the source... top of the engine. Someone remind me what I'm looking at here?

Just for good measure, check that the little bleed screw on top of the thermostat housing hasn't loosened...if it is it coolant will run down the side of the outlet...

Brains trust spot on as usual - coolant bypass tube has a sporadic leak. During the service today it was pressure tested and it didn't leak, so I'll pick one up from eBay or RockAuto and fit it over the next few weeks.

Another question for the brains trust: I had the auto service done today, and it appears the mechanic didn't do the full ZF procedure of flushing then refilling, as I had 4.5L of ZF8 fluid returned to me..... Not thrilled about that at all, and didn't realise until I was home and looked in to boot.

So, the question - do I go to a ZF specialist and ask them to dump what's in there and refill, hold onto the 4.5L and do it in 50k or so if I've still got the car, or sell the remaining bottles and make something back on that liquid gold?
