Default Unsuccessful head gasket replacement!!

Hi all. I just replaced head gasket on my 2000 xj, followed torque settings for head and manifold etc. also replaced water pump, radiator and thermostat.

Thought everything was fine but as soon as i fired her up there was heaps of popping and backfiring and jar running like crap. Not prepared to even let the engine run. Put all push rods back in same spots and so on?? Any suggestions???

Does yours have a dissy? Did you ensure that the firing order is correct? ie the correct lead connected to the correct spark plug?

Finally got the other jeep (XJ diesel) ~ #2, to start on a battery. Idles fine. When I rev it, way too much black smoke & its a bit gutless. Will put a boost gauge on it to see if the turbo is ok.
Water pump had a dribble, the more I drove it the less dribble. After about 1/2 hr of running was down to a drop every now & again, (I kept it full).
No bubbles in the top tank so looks like the heads are fine.
Didnt overheat.
Way over full of oil, need to drain some out before running again.
Discovered it has a MAF & not a MAP.
Cruise control works, unusual for an XJ diesel to have one.
Sounds like the ball joints are on their way out. Will fill with grease & see if they shut up.
Air con works well.
All round, with a bit more TLC, it should become a good jeep. It has taken a while to get this far.
Hope to have it as good as possible for when jeep #1 shits its self.
