Okay!
Last week I had an issue with a non-starting car, one symptom being a loose ignition barrel. On pulling it out I found the cast alloy keyway in the back of the barrel had given way. During the week I got another barrel sent to me from a wrecker in Muswelbrook (cheaper than a local one in Penrith who wanted another 50% in price!) and I whacked that in. Nice!
Good, positive feel in the rotation and the car started first time. Yay! Moved vehicle and just for jolly tried the key again. Dead. Nothing. Just fuel pump, ancillary lights.

That night, got online on here (AJOR) and did some research. Yup, went outside, shook the auto gear selector and she started. (say it together folks!!) NSS!! Back online and look up GoJeeps site on how to remove and repair, along with another couple of you-tube videos and the chat on here about NSS work was very helpful.

So today was about pulling out the NSS. Pulled out said unit, opened it up and found it a bit gummed up, but one of the floating contacts was well worn and jammed back into the sliding arm. I needed to fix this so I took to my pile of "useful stuff" (my friends have called it junk- how rude!) and pulled out a piece of copper sleeving. It had the right wall thickness and with a bit of cutting and hammering, filing and sanding I ended up with a new contact.

Here's everything open and cleaned.

New contact on the left, worn/original contact on the right. Scrap tube on far right from which I made the new piece.

Put it all back together and so far, so good!
I love that good feeling you get when you "do it yourself" (along with all the info that everyone else has supplied after they've bashed their head against the brick wall trying to figure it out in the first place!!!)

On the weekend I gave the Xj its first decent run since doing the OBD2 swap, 580km round trip up the Bruce.

What I found was interesting, more responsive then it was on OBD1 and despite running at 110kmh where normally I'd run at 100 or 105 as it used to be heavier on fuel at 110kmh it was actually more economical at the higher speed then it used to be at 100kmh when it was OBD1.

So it's more responsive from the line.
More "willing" at speed.
More economical.

Just need to see how it is with the trailer on later in the year but so far there seems to be no downside to the swap other then the time involved....

Well fitted New Crank angle sensor today,(not a job I like but done now and hoping now sorted), new MAP and TPS as well. In recent days, new coil, new Cam Angle sensor, Distributor cap & rotor, leads, valve cover gasket. So does run nicer overall and temp remains low, also fitted new trans cooler, in middle of bonnet vent install will finish that after work tomorrow hoping for better reliability and better towing.

Which brand sensors did you go with Grant? I would be curious to see if they are the same ones I got from RA and whether they will last. Some are saying that you need genuine but I was under the impression genuine is no longer an option regardless. I have both CPS' ready to go in when required but won't fit them until mine fail, which surely can't be that long as they have done 280k.

Regards A

I got the standard motor products brand, middle price range, I was planning on doing same holding off install, but as I still had my issue put everything in, I hope they last even half life of genuine will see this car out, just glad I could get the parts easily.

I tried to order genuine locally pretty much told "we don't support that model" could buy after market but price was 5 times higher.

Yerr same brand here. I ordered Standard as I was able to combine freight and not pay $120 because of two locations, even for a tiny parcel. I knew someone had been told the genuine sensors were no longer available.
