Then see if you can source a Factory Service Manual. It should be not just specofic for your zj but also your year model. Also a FSM will be 1000+pages compared to the 250ish for the crappy haynes.

Thanks Wooders,

Got hold of one, but it too has a diagram that doesn't match my serpentine belt config. Josha to the rescue again, posting me a photo of the belt diagram from his engine bay which mine lacks. That one looks a LOT closer but I need to have a proper look to confirm.

Now I've just got to find time at work to print the 1500+ page FSM

Hey Josha,

It's going pretty well but I'm just too busy to give it the time and attention it needs.
Topped up the trans fluid which has helped a lot with the slipping gears, but still not perfect.
It sometimes slips in first and loses all momentum as the revs go way up, and often won't re-engage. I can select low range and all is good.
Haven't done the diffs or tcase yet - they seem OK.
Still no rego so it only gets used on my 700m driveway - up in the morning & down at night which makes it hard to really test what's going on.
How's yours going?

Do a complete change of the Trans fluid - it is amazing what difference it makes to gear change and smoothness.
You need to drop the pan to change the fluid but this will also allow you to see whats floating around in the old fluid.
I use Valvoline DTF/DX3 and the filter kit (replacement internal filter and pan gasket) is KFS909

Yep, understand and appreciate your advice - you have been massively helpful!
I was going to do that but then wimped out when I saw that I need torx head for the filter and a bunch of stuffing around I couldn't fit into my weekend. I'll get onto it as soon as I can!
Is the filter kit available from repco etc or only Jeep?

Oh NO .. A jeep stealer would see you coming!
That one came form Bursons, but my local Bursons seems to think it is a Jeep dealer in pricing now, any auto place can order it if they don't have it on stock.
I would also use some silicon (blue) sealant on the pan as well as the gasket.
